Are you planning your special day but you’re not sure if a winter wedding is for you?

When it comes to picking a season to get married in, winter is not always every couple’s first choice. The phrase “it’s too cold” comes to mind…however, here at Holiday Inn Fareham-Solent, we think that winter weddings create the backdrop for a romantic day.

Here are 5 things you should consider when you’re planning a winter wedding, straight from Becky, our Wedding Co-ordinator:

1. Getting great photographs

First of all, the light on a sunny winter’s day can’t be beaten when it comes to getting amazing photographs. Think of all the beautiful shots that your photographer can take with that low, crisp winter sun beaming through. If it is a fresher day, the feeling of love and being close shines through.

2. Pick the right venue

At this time of year, daylight hours are fewer, so it is a great idea to book a venue with plenty of inside space for a couple of reasons.

Having an indoor space as well as an outdoor space means you have several spaces where you can take the perfect photos. Also, your guests will have somewhere warm they can head to between the important parts of your wedding day.

It may even benefit you to find a venue that can host your ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening reception all under one roof. Not only does this save on car hire and the possibility of delays in your day, but it means that your look will not get ruined after hours of preparation!

3. Choose your decorations carefully

Visit your wedding venue when it is getting dark, such as in the late afternoon, so you can envisage how you could decorate the space so that it looks good in all kinds of light.

“Another one of my top tips regarding winter weddings is that you should not be afraid to use the theme of Christmas in your decorations.” – Becky, Wedding Co-ordinator

Whether you are hiring decorations or creating your own, the inspiration and availability of such themed decorations are aplenty. How about an icy blue winter colour scheme or a warmer gold and burgundy theme?

Do not be afraid to incorporate the Christmas tree into a centrepiece either! Fairy lights, candles and wreaths are all wonderful ideas for centrepieces or creating a feeling of warmth and romance at this time of the year.

4. Pick the right kind of clothing

Embrace the cooler weather by investing in accessories for yourself, bridesmaids and groomsmen. Maybe some faux fur shawls for the women or matching scarves for the men? Have some fun with it.

5. Consider a seasonal menu for your big day!

You could have mulled wine as an arrival drink for your guests instead of champagne or Prosecco, or even winter Pimm’s! Serve warm canapes as an alternative to cold canapes, for example, mini sausages or small goat’s cheese tarts. These are perfect at this time of the year and your guests will appreciate something warm to snack on.
